How to download youtube videos using Mozilla Firefox and VLC

Hi guys! This is the updated post of my "How to download youtube videos using Mozilla Firefox" tutorial. I decided to create a new post instead of updating the older one because its seems that many things have been changed in Youtube since I created that post and it will take to much time editing my original post.

First of all unlike my older post this tutorial does not only need Mozilla Firefox but also VLC media player. If you are asking why then I will explain it later when its time to create the actual video. I only tested this method in version 28.1 and I am not sure if this method will work in older version of Firefox.

Procedure
  1. First open Firefox and go to youtube.com and select the video that you want to download.
  2. Next click the quality option in the bottom left part of the video player and change the quality from auto to your preferred quality maybe 360p or higher if you want. Then wait for around 3 to 5 seconds before proceding to step 3.
  3. Now in Firefox open network monitor by pressing shift+ctrl+Q.

  4. Now scroll up and click one of the rows that has a videoplayback text in the File column.
  5. Then click the Parameter tag in right pane and look for clen and remember the number right beside it. Actually that is the file size.
  6. Now right click the videoplayback text that you selected earlier and then choose "Copy URL".
  7. Next paste the url into a text editor. Notepad is always available in Windows but while I am writing this post I am using Ubuntu that is why I will use gedit.
  8. Now repeat step 4 up to 7 but instead of choosing the videoplayback text that you selected earlier choose another. And then on step 5 the number right beside clen should be different from the one that you remember earlier before proceding to step 6. That is why I told you that you need to remember it. If it is the same number then repeat step 4 again.
  9. If you did it correctly you now have to links in your text editor like the screen shot below.
  10. Now in the text editor find the text that start with "&range" without the quotes if there is. If there is none then just proceed to step 12.
  11. Now delete that text beginning from &range up to the last number right beside it. Note that both of the links have this text and needs to be remove.
  12. Next copy the first link in the text editor and paste it in the address bar of Firefox and press enter. The download dialog will show, click ok to download. Do it again to the second link.

Note that if the download dialog does not appear just right click the page and choose "Save Page As..." to save the file.

  13. If you did it correctly you now have to files with different file size. This files is actually the video and the audio. You can test it by opening one of this in VLC media player.
  14. Next we need to join this file because no one wants two separate files for a single video. This is where we will use VLC because it has this kind of feature but you can also use Windows Movie Maker, VirtualDub or any kind of video making software for this task.
  15. Now open VLC media player and then in the menu click "Open Multiple Files..." and then the "Open Media" dialog will open. Click the add button and locate the files that you have downloaded earlier. Only select the file with a bigger file size and press "Open". Next in the "Open Media" dialog check the "Show more options". And then check the "Play another media synchronously  (extra audio file, ...)" option. Then click the browse button below it and then another window will open. Click the add button there and select file that you download with a smaller file size and click "Open". Now click the select button to hide that dialog. Next in the "Open Media" dialog you will see at the bottom right a play button. Change it to stream by clicking the drop down arrow right beside it. A new window will open click the "Next >" button. Click "Add" and then "Browse" and choose were you want the video to be save and then click "Save". Next click "Next >" button. Uncheck "Activate Transcoding" and then click "Next >" and then "Stream".
  16. If you did the last step correctly then you now have a single video file that contains video and audio stream.
